This is my first post on this blog so I thought to present myself, my research and what this blog is all about here.
Who are you? I'm Solène a French Ethnomusicology PhD student at Royal Holloway University of London (funded by TECHNE AHRC UK). I am researching the impact of cultural policy in the development of news towns and taking the urban ethnomusicological case study of Cergy-Pontoise from 1965 to present days.
What is an Urban Ethnomusicological case study? Well, ethnomusicology is: 'the study of why, and how human beings are musical' (Rice 2014: 1) and Urban ethnomusicology simply means: 'studies pertaining to music of urban areas' (Schramm 1982: 12). It's a bit too simple for a definition as urban ethnomusicology raises new challenges and questions. I will tackle them in an article on this blog.
Why Cergy-Pontoise? I grew up and lived my life in Cergy-Pontoise from 1991 until 2011. When I was completing my master's degree in Ethnomusicology and I had to do a 'major project'. I decided to do it on my home town.... Cergy-Pontoise. The topic was the production of identity via music in a new town. I enjoyed very much discussing with local residents and actors of Cergy-Pontoise during my short fieldwork of 2 weeks and there was many more people I needed to talk to and questions that needed to be explored. This is why I decided to pursue this project as a thesis at Royal Holloway University of London.
What do you want to achieve with your PhD? I would like to understand the relations between the way public money is invested into arts/musical initiatives and the local musicians/associations (community group). Is money as important as human relations to support music initiatives? How do the local musicians/associations affects the residents and also the space where they perform? Should local artists and associations be supported by public money and policy. If so how ?
Why this blog? This blog aims to keep everyone who is interested up to date with my research. I will publish updates, thoughts related to my PhD work, articles and pictures about my fieldwork and writing. I will also publish articles about events and conference I will attend.

Ceci est mon premier article sur ce blog alors j'ai pensé qu'il serait bien de me présenter ainsi que que ma recherche et le blog.
Qui es-tu? Je suis Solène, une Française qui vit à Londres et est doctorante en Ethnomusicologie à Royal Holloway University of London (financée par TECHNE AHRC UK). Le thème de ma thèse et l'impact des politiques culturelles dans le développement des villes nouvelles. Mon cas d'étude d'ethnomusicologie urbaine est la ville nouvelle de Cergy-Pontoise de 1965 à nous jours.
Qu'est-ce qu'un cas d'étude d'ethnomusicologie urbaine? L'ethnomusicologie est 'l'étude du pourquoi et comment l'homme est musical' (Rice 2014: 1 traduit de l'anglais par moi). L'Ethnomusicologie urbaine veut simplement dire que la recherche porte sur la musique en zones urbaines (Schramm 1982: 12). C'est un peu simpliste et en vrai ça pose beaucoup de questions dont je parlerai dans un prochain article.
Pourquoi Cergy-Pontoise? J'ai vécu à Cergy-Pontoise de ma naissance en 1991 à 2011. Quand j'ai réalisé mon mémoire de master en Ethnomusicologie à City University c'est tout naturellement que je me suis tournée vers ma ville natale. Le sujet que j'ai choisi était : 'La production d'identité par la musique en ville nouvelle'. J'ai beaucoup aimé discuter avec les résidents et acteurs locaux de Cergy-Pontoise pendant mon petit voyage de terrain de 2 semaines. Cependant, il y a avait encore beaucoup de gens que je n'avais pas eu la chance de rencontrer et d'interviewer et beaucoup de questions et pistes de réflexions pas encore explorées. C'est pourquoi j'ai décidé de poursuivre ce projet en doctorat à Royal Holloway University of London.
Quel est ton but avec cette thèse? J'aimerais comprendre la façon dont l'argent publique est investi ou non dans des causes/associations musicales et les artistes locaux. L'argent est-il aussi important que les relations humaines pour mener à bien un projet musical? Comment les musiciens et les associations locales impactent les résidents et les espaces urbains où ils se produisent? Est-ce que les artistes et associations locales doivent être aidés par l'argent et les politiques publiques? Si oui, comment?
Pourquoi ce blog? Ce blog a pour but de donner des nouvelles de ma recherche et de son avancement à ceux qui seraient intéressés. Je vais publier sur ce blog des nouvelles de ma recherche, des pensées et réflexions sur mon doctorat ainsi que des articles et des photos à propos de mes travaux de terrain et mes écrits. Je posterai aussi des articles sur les conférences et événements où j'irai.
